Seen as the jewel in the crown of professional football franchises in Australia, the Sydney Rovers FC Board comprising business leaders and former national team footballers Ian Rowden, Peter Tredinnick, Charlie Yankos and John Moore, former head of Sydney 2000 Olympic Marketing, were awarded the 12th license of the A League in October 2009. Having undertaken an intensive period of research, planning and development to ensure the start-up is a success, a central element of their strategy is the identification of a proven Sports Administrator of the highest calibre to lead the organisation as it wins the hearts and minds of the Sydney public in what is a highly competitive sporting landscape.
Sydney Rovers will enter the A League in season 2011-2012 and it is anticipated the Chief Executive will be appointed by mid 2010. The Chief Executive will be the lead role in an impressive management group and will be ultimately responsible for the establishment of the organisation, the foundation of the business, Football Operations and the recruitment of a first class operational team, its day-to-day management and ultimately its entrance into the A League and its success thereafter. This represents an unrivalled opportunity to lead a professional club from its inception in one of the toughest sporting markets in Australia and one of the most competitive in the world. The Western Sydney region has an enormous catchment of fans (with the highest level of participation in Australia) and they crave and deserve a world class club.
The role will have ultimate responsibility for all operational activity and commercial strategy. The Chief Executive will work closely with the Board to draw a business a plan that will likely quickly see the appointment of key personnel across Operations, Marketing and Commercial Strategy and a Football department with responsibility for both the professional staff and academy structure. The CEO will lead and guide this team through the delivery of the Boards strategy. Key to the organisations success will be the creation of a ‘Sydney Rovers culture’ that engages the community and inspires both the management team and playing staff. The clubs brand equity will reside in the intimacy of the relationship between the club and its local community.
The successful candidate will be an inspirational leader with a proven track record in a world class sporting environment and who will have the capacity to both build the vision for the club for 2011 and beyond, while also being detail focused and hands-on through the organisation's foundation.
Main duties and responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will be agreed with the Board but will include;
- Lead the formulation of strategic business plans and annual operating plan
- Manage the day to day operations of the organisation including appointment and deployment of staff
- Creating a culture of strong financial management and effective financial control
- Act as an ambassador for the club at both a local, national and international level.
- Promoting the organisations programs and services within the community
- Liaise and negotiate with the Football Federation Australia, sponsors, government agencies and other external bodies
Experience
- Proven within a National Sporting or entertainment organization at a ‘C’ level
- Able to demonstrate management of a high-profile Board
- Experience in leading multi-dimensional teams to achieve operational outcomes
- Highly developed analytical and problem solving skills
- Demonstrated strategic planning skills within a high performance culture
- Effective budget and financial planning skills
- High-level PR and communication skills
